Terry was raised in an extended family without means in Greenpoint, NY that survived due to the will and determination of the strong women in her life; her great grandmother and particularly her mother, Mary. These women worked to support their families during an era when, for women, that was particularly difficult. The family eventually was able to move to Flushing where Terry would meet the love of her life Rudy. They married, started their family, and moved to Bayshore where they raised their four children; Eric, Tom, Ken & Karen. Terry always worked to make our lives as simple and carefree as possible even with financial challenges the family faced. She went on to become the first in her family to get her post-secondary degree in Early Childhood Education, her passion for many years, before moving on to become an administrator for the teachers union. As her children moved out and married, she continued to be her generous and warm self, welcoming her daughters-in-law, Laura, Kathy, Ellen and (favorite) son-in-law Adam into her home. Always the rightfully proud mother of her expanding family she could not wait to get involved as she would start to meet her 7 grandchildren; Steven, Kevin, Erin, Michelle, Jake, Julia and Amanda. She carefully plotted her time to spend with each of them, creating close individual relationships that she cherished and will remain fond memories for all them in the days and years to come. Moms battled against the pain from a few chronic ailments in her later years but fought though the adversity with the toughness and resilience she had witnessed from the women who raised her.
There was never any doubt of moms love for us and she took great pride in all of us and our God given talents. But more important to me were the values instilled in me through her awareness of, and graciousness towards, our shortcomings where she would lift us up without judgement or repercussion. Mom had a gift to always accept us as we were and meet us wherever we were at.
A memory, very early in my life, but repeated to me humorously at key moments for many years to come, occurred during one of our summer visits to Sunken Meadow Beach. Mom would load her 3 young boys (at that time) into the car to give us a day out. When it was time to leave the beach, Mom would gather most stuff and ask us to each grab a few items to head back to the car. Her only request from me was I carry my own plastic pail which I had played with all day. I refused. I stomped off the beach empty-handed while mom collected the thing things I left behind, along with all the other gear required for a day at the beach with my brothers and lugged it all back to the car.
Later in life, as I procrastinated on research papers due for school assignments, I remember Mom working with me until the early morning hours to pull things together and get it typed up properly. These memories are more vivid and even at that time I had great appreciation for her patience with me. I would attempt to follow her lead with my sons as they too would occasionally prove stubborn or come to me with late night tasking for their school projects always mindful of the grace mom had shown me.
Mom was provided a catholic education where she developed her faith that was important to her. Mom provided my introduction to the Lord and guided me through my sacraments providing the foundation for my relationship with the Lord today. Emulating her values and our shared faith, I passed that gift on to my sons culminating in a special moment when Grandma Terry was asked by her Grandson Steven to guide and advise him through his confirmation. A role she cherished and a blessing to them both as she used the opportunity to rekindle her relationship with the Lord.
As great as my love for mom had always been, that love would only increase as she shared her love with my best friend and wife Kathy and eventually my sons Steven and Kevin. Mom admired the caring yet no-nonsense approach she saw in Kathy and I suspect she secretly knew how this would benefit me and our marriage should I attempt to avoid ‘carrying my pail’ somewhere down the line. Unlike a stereotypical mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship, Terry & Kathy saw similarities and admired traits in each other that allowed them to form their own special bond.
Our move to Maryland was not easy for mom, nor Kathy and me, especially since months earlier we had shared we would be expecting our first child and mom’s first grandchild Steven. True to form, mom resolved to find a way to maintain a close connection with us but more importantly Steven and eventually Kevin. Whether we were traveling to visit the ‘swimming pools and movie stars’ of New York or she and Grandpa Rudy would visit us in Maryland such as the annual birthday trifectas in October to pick apples and pumpkins, the distance never seemed far. As the boys grew we would share vacation experiences like our frequent trips to Wildwood, NJ where together with our larger family, we would all gather and relent to a daily ritual that required a trip to an oft-maligned arcade to play Fascination until their young eyes would look dazed as if hypnotized. In later years we would venture out further, sometimes meeting her and Grandpa Rudy in a crowded destination airport only to watch Steven and Kevin try to avoid her embarrassingly loud ‘air hugs’.
A humble yet skilled creator in the kitchen, like her mother before her, mom enjoyed preparing meals either to test her skill or try something new, but more importantly, to sit down and enjoy together. Sharing her passion for cooking with her grandchildren at a young age, as she had with me when I was young, allowed for some of that passion to take hold with them. That seed she planted in them eventually spouted as Kevin as well as our niece Amanda took an interest in creating their own meals and confections. And of course to moms great joy, they would share with her their successes and failures, and discuss cooking techniques whether tried and true or newly discovered. After recently hearing Kevin talking about his use of a rice cooker, she was determined to get involved, pressing him to get her one too and then banking on his assistance to help her learn how to use it. How clever of her to engage him in his current interest and sustain that bond, like she did with all of us. The discussion of rice-based entrees continuing with Kevin through her final days.
I certainly will miss my mom but as I write this I can see more clearly that she remains with me and my family in so many ways and I will be forever grateful to her for that.
Love you mom!
May you rest in peace with the Lord and with your mother Mary.
Tom

I feel very fortunate to have had Terry as my mother in law. I have known Terry since I was 19 and she always welcomed me into her family. I know Tom is the person he is due to Terry and Rudy and I consider myself fortunate to share a life with Tom and our 2 children. The only thing better than having Terry as my mother in law was having her as a grandmother to Steven and Kevin. They were very lucky to call her their grandmother and even though we move to Maryland she found a way to foster a special relationship with eachof them. Some of Steven and Kevin's fondest memories are of their summer camp weeks spent at Grandma Terry and Grandpa Rudy. Between minigolf, Rummikub marathons, poker with real poker chips and the awesome food there was no better camp! Terry's personal touch with them built a great foundation which shined through as Steven and Kevin became adults and still made time to travel indivually to spend time with Grandma Terry and Grandpa Rudy! We all know she will forever love us more and that is saying a lot since we loved her a lot.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace Amen. May almighty God bless us with his peace and strength, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Love,
Kathy

Dear Tom, Kenny, Eric, Karen and Rudy (Dad),
It's been so long since I've seen Terry, but I have such fond memories of her. I spent so much time at your house that I started calling her Mom. She was always so glad to see me when I stopped by and was always good for a laugh. She became such an important part of my life and I'm so glad I got to know her. I pray that God will give you comfort during this time. Peace and love to you all, Mike (and Kathy) Pregitzer
