An adjunct professor at Nassau Community College, I don't spend much time in and about the office, but I did have occasion to see Joan once a semester when handing in my syllabus. I always found her kind and helpful then, warm and welcoming, willing to make small talk. I've just found out about her passing today and thought you might be consoled even at this time by knowing of a string of college e-mail messages from December 26th, when Joan's death was announced by the department chair, until January 4th of this new year. Besides echoing the sentiment of sadness at the news, it rings clear in the messages that Joan was well-liked and is missed. Like one of the message writers, I, too, had hoped to see her at the office party in December. I didn't know she was so close to entering her spiritual life. May she rest in peace. She remains with us in memory; her family in hearts and prayers here at the college.

Dear Yodice family,
Joan was such a lovely person, who brightened our workdays in the English department through all the years she was there. It was a lift to the spirit to go in to her office and see her glowing smile, with the adorable pictures of baby Giana behind her. Please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss and know that you are in our thoughts.

Please accept my condolences on the loss of beautiful, kind, warm, bright, wonderful Joan. I have missed her every day since she stopped working in the English Department. I know I'm one of so many who felt we had a special relationship with Joan. As hard as she was working to keep things running efficiently in the Department, she always had time to make people feel cared about. I will remember her always, and I send all my best to her family at this difficult time.

Joan was such a positive presence in the English Department at Nassau Community College. Often I'd drop by her office for some reason or another, and we'd get sidetracked talking about this/that, but it always came around to Stephen King. And I thought I was a big fan! Joan would read his books as soon as they came out, but we'd have to wait to talk about them until I had a chance to catch up. I'll miss her good cheer and friendship. My deepest condolences to all her family.

Joan was kindest person, so giving to her colleagues and friends at the college. No matter how busy she was, she always welcomed me into her office when I sought her advice or just paid a visit. Our many conversations always turned to family. She loved her family so, and as she would share stories about her children and grandchildren, the light of that love just filled the room. Joan was a very special person. I shall miss her terribly. Please accept my heartfelt sympathies on her passing and my prayers for you all.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Joan's passing. She was well loved and is lovingly remembered by the English faculty at NCC. I fondly recall her helping me adjust to my new job here in 2008. And through the many semesters since, she was invaluable as a colleague, always there to facilitate and help guide my professional development. She is sorely missed among her co-workers. I offer my heartfelt condolences to Joan's family and friends for the loss of one so capable, so warm, so friendly, and so loving.

Dear Joan's family,
Please accept my heartfelt condolence on Joan's passing. I am still in disbelief, as I can only see her smiling face in her office or in the mail room and our friendly chats about our kids. I was one of several people she touched, simply by her beautiful presence. I hope the many sweet memories of your life together will offer you comfort.

To our Joan.
Although your position was secretary to the Chair, you were always so much more than that. So very many of us spent time sharing joys and sorrows with you, in the little seat next to your desk. Room change? Ask Joan. Schedule problem? Ask Joan. Good joke? Tell Joan. Husband making you crazy? Tell Joan. Always there; always smiling; always ready to listen and tell us not to get excited over it.
At the retirement celebration just over a week ago, we honored you with a toast and a memorial in the NCC garden: Joan Yodice. English Department. It will go up in the late summer. We will remember you there, but we missed you so much at the party.
For me, Joanie, you were a friend and confidante. As we joked about retiring, we always said, "Don't you dare." Well, you left me behind, but with much good advice. I miss your face, your voice, and your presence in my doorway as you left for each weekend. "Ok. Goodbye. I'm going. Don't stay too long. . ."
I hear you, Joan. See you again, in a while.
Love,
Cathy
