On the occasion of your passing, and on the day of your wake, a letter to take to heaven.
Dear Mom,
As I write this I am inconsolable. The affect that you have had on my life is immeasurable.
You have taught me to read, and to love reading and stories. You have taken me on adventures from an early age to NYC where my short legs struggled to match speed with your’s, and the Great Seal of the State of New York wall paper on the inside of the LIRR cars is as fresh in my memory as if it was yesterday. The Christmas that Santa Claus gave me all of the Tonka Toys, stacked higher than I was tall, will live with me forever. The trips to the corner to sit on the mailbox and wave at the men driving the “digging up the road machines” back to the yard at the end of the day is such an incredibly warm memory.
You encouraged me to write to presidential candidate Jimmy Carter on an August afternoon when I had nothing to do, only to receive a hand-written reply and later, an invitation to his inauguration. A great family memory with you, Dad and Amy; where I saw the unforgettable Smithsonian, history being made, and also learned that strawberry shakes and cheeseburgers were not available for all meals, specifically breakfast.
When we traveled we always took the back roads to see how the people really lived. Years later I was surprised to discover that Albany was not a few days away by car, but only a few hours away on the major highways. I was shocked, but my love for culture, history, nature, and sightseeing was cemented.
You ensured that I never went without, and always found a way to make things happen for me.
When I did something wrong, you always steered me in the right direction, and taught me how to forgive.
You taught me how to drive. When I was enrolled in the Driver’s Ed class in high school, on the first day in the car, the instructor let me drive the car all the way to Jones Beach. She asked me who taught me how to drive? She was pleased when I answered “my mother.”
When I was nearing college age, we went on a tour to visit upstate colleges, to see which college felt right. We were met with a 22” blizzard. On the trip, I learned about the superior traction of the front wheel drive in the new Camry. And I still choose Buffalo.
When it was time to pick a college major and career, you helped me find volunteer positions, mentors, and summer internships to allow me to make the right choices.
You were always a friend to my friends. You offered them support and advice whenever they needed it, or just a friendly conversation when all was well. Their words and sentiments expressed to me since your passing, are as much geared at consoling me, as it is at consoling themselves.
You taught me how to deeply listen to the meaning in people’s words, and to remember what they are saying.
You have taught me to love nature and to respect all of God’s creatures. From the smallest plant and insect, to the mightiest animal and person.
Your love for reading was amazing. The numerous books and stacks of magazines that you read weekly left me in awe. You also always knew what was on my mind and what would be helpful for me to know. I recall that you would frequently cull a few books and articles from what you read and give it to me because it was of benefit for me to know. One of the books has become required reading for any new engineer or summer intern that crosses my path.
You have always encouraged me. When I was undecided on a particular choice, you always said to do it. I heard the subtext of your words every time, that is, that life is short with each day and each experience precious, and that we should enjoy them while we can.
You always put people at ease.
You listened to me when I needed to talk about affairs of the heart, and worked to mend my pains.
You always had my back.
I loved our daily conversations about everything and nothing. Your open mindedness, intelligence, understanding, wit, and humor always made it a joy.
You were a very good and kind woman and mother.
I will always be by your side.
Thank-you Mom for giving me life, and for teaching me how to use it. I will miss you dearly, and remember you eternally.
Unforgettably yours,
Your loving son,
Jimmy

P.S. I remember you saying that you envisioned your last moments on Earth ending by driving Spot off of a cliff, and another expectation was that your final remains could be placed in a “Chock full o’ Nuts” can. You had these ideas long before the movies had them. While we respect these thoughts, and now that Spot is no longer available, we choose to lay you to rest in a beautiful satin lined maple casket, and with Dad, on a sunny hill in Calverton. However, I have enclosed a picture of Thelma and Louise jumping their car off of a cliff, and a label from a “Chock full o’ Nuts” can, lest you think that I forgot. Fly High Mom. Love you. ❤️
P.S.S. I pray that I will take the lessons that you have provided me and treat people in the same way.
P.S.S.S. There is so much more to say, I will carry it in my heart until we meet again.

Wanted to say thank you all for letting me take care of such a beautiful and an amazing lady. I’m blessed when I meet such a wonderful and caring family. I’ll never forget how she made me jump thinking I hurt her while I was assessing. She opened her eyes and laughed She got me good. God bless
